Basic Symbolic Computation
Maple's whole point is working with exact, symbolic math — not decimal approximations. This is the single biggest mental shift coming from a calculator or MATLAB.
Defining an expression
f := x^2 + 3*x + 2;
The := is Maple's assignment operator (not =, which is reserved for writing equations to solve).
Solving an equation
solve(x^2 + 3*x + 2 = 0, x);
Maple returns the exact roots, -1 and -2 — not a decimal approximation.
Simplifying and factoring
factor(f);
expand((x+1)*(x+2));
Why This Matters for Your Exams
Symbolic computation is exact — Maple won't round your answer the way a calculator does, which matters whenever a later step in a problem depends on an earlier exact value.
